CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course emphasizes communication skills necessary in the business environment. It includes composing business correspondence, developing and giving oral presentations, practicing recording and translating information using the latest technology, and developing effective communication skills. This course integrates composition skills and grammar skills necessary in the preparation of business correspondence and reports.
SYLLABUS:
REQUIRED TEXT: 1. Business Communication, Building Critical Skills (Third Edition) ! by Locker and Kaczmarek, Publisher: McGraw-Hill. Also required is The Gregg Reference Manual, 10th Edition, by William A. Sabin, Bundle: ISBN: 978-0-07-344005-7. 2. A USB (Universal Serial Bus) device for the storage of coursework. 3. Textbooks from the following courses should be used for reference when completing assignments in this course: AOT 134, Office Communications; AOT 105, Keyboarding; AOT 110, Document Formatting; and CPT 101, Introduction to Computers. 4. Microsoft Word 2003 or 2007. If you do not have this software, computers are available in the Business Division Student Lab (Engineering Technology Building, Room 115). 5. All students must access CampusCruiser regarding final course grades/transcripts, information postings, financial records, etc. Students in traditional classes must access CampusCruiser for postings regarding assignments, grades, and e-mail. Students in online classes must access Web CT for specific course information regarding assignments and due dates, test dates, and e-mail correspondence; online courses require weekly participation. Attendance in an online class is defined by correspondence and the student is expected to demonstrate, at least once a week, that he/she is actively involved and is corresponding in the class. Examples of activities that can be used to demonstrate this involvement include, but not limited to the following: posting/receiving e-mails, participating in online course discussions via bulletin boards and chat rooms, and completing and submitting course assignments. Students not meeting the minimum attendance/correspondence requirement may be withdrawn with a grade of "W" or "WF" based upon the student's academic standing at the last date of attendance/correspondence. Email through WebCT will be the primary means of communication, especially when the student is having difficulty answering a question or solving an exercise or a problem. For your instructor to help you effectively, please provide as much information as possible when communicating and it is the student's responsibility to check all virtual correspondence (email, bulletin board) regularly.
